Why do I do science? Because it is exciting, amazing, thought provoking, constantly surprising, and very fun!

      To find out answers.
There are so many questions that we can ask to make our lives better, and science is the tool that lets us find out. Studying science also opens up the world to you – shows you how things work, why the world is as it is, I think that we should be interested in this – as humans, we should be interested in where we live and who we are.

I really liked it. I did think about other things, like learning languages and travelling the world, but I wasn’t that good at french, or becoming an actress but it didn’t seem like I had much chance of being able to make it into a career, as in both cases I knew people at school who were much better at languages and drama than I was. But I really enjoyed science and with blind excitement I just kept doing what I enjoyed (through University and then through my jobs). I met a wonderful man when I was doing my science degree who told me to apply for all the best PhDs as if you apply and don’t get them you haven’t lost anything. I followed his advice and got a great PhD studentship which I really enjoyed and it set up my career. I think my friends advice would fit lots of situations – if you try and fail then you haven’t lost anything but if you don’t try you’ll never get the chance…….
