Maybe! When I was at seniors school, I enjoyed quite a lot of subjects. I enjoyed graphics (we designed games for kids, made films posters and stuff), PE (especially things like football and rugby), English and things. But, yeh, I did enjoy science. My teachers were pretty cool, and tried to make it as fun as they could, but we didn’t do that many experiments. Is that the same for you? Science got much better when we got to A-level, as we got to design and run our own experiments. I made a catapult in Physics – I wanted to try and work out how far I could throw ball bearings using different set-ups on the catapult! That was pretty cool. You like science?

My favourite subject was definately biology. I loved drawing cells and looking at them under the microscope. I really enjoyed drama too (at high school) and was in a few plays. When I did my PhD I joined a drama group who was similar to “Whose line is it anyway” and on a Friday some members would do a show that members of the public paid to watch (including me on a couple of occassions). It was really fun and I think most scientists also have hobbies and other interests.

I didn’t really like science much at school – it didn’t feel very inspiring (after we stopped setting fire to things in most lessons). Also, I don’t think my teachers thought I was very great at science. I liked English and languages, and I only really discovered that I could do science properly when I went to sixth form and university. I know that science teaching is far more exciting and interesting now, so I am really envious of people studying GCSE science now.
