That’s very kind of you, hollib! I hope that your vote helps me go through to tomorrow’s final. 🙂
After my PhD (which finishes in April 2013), I’d like to get a job somewhere looking at similar things to what I’ve been studying already. I’ve really enjoyed all of the different techniques that I’ve been learning over the last couple of years, and it’ll be really nice to carry on perfecting those skills and learn new things about my material. Whether or not I want that job to be in a University or in a company, I don’t really know!
Eventually, I’d like to progress to getting a job where I can do some teaching of some students, manage a group of people who are all looking into exciting things with me, and go to lots of conferences to chat to people about my work. And, of course, I’d really like to carry on doing things like this – I really enjoy doing stuff like this, where I get to chat to interested and interesting young people and share my love of science with them 🙂
Got any other questions for me? Been enjoying I’m a Scentist so far?
Ahh right that sounds all fasinating to hear.. I would have liked to been able to talk to you longer today at school to get to know you abit better .. I mean to get to know more about your job and how it would help with the world and that.
If you was to get though to the finals and win.. what would you do finance wise ? Would you get more things you’d need to help more with your work or to be able to help other people learn about what it is you do and why it is so important?
Great question hollib. If I won today, I would organise some really cool Materials experiments and then take them to the local schools in Oxfordshire. The department have a really good programme already where they invite schools in for the day (Check out http://outreach.materials.ox.ac.uk/ – your teacher could organise a visit to the Materials department to do some really great, fun experiments!). I want to try and take some of those experiments (like making silly putty and investigating its properties), as well as come up with some other experiments (such as investigating why we use steels in buildings and wood in tables, and not the other way around etc.). I love Materials and I love science, so I would the money to go to other schools to share this passion and get everyone excited about science experiments.
Does that sound like a good plan? Also, don’t forget to vote for the last time today! Every vote counts 🙂
